Which Heathrow Terminal

Posted on 22 September 202214 March 2024

Terminal 4 was closed in 2008 after being damaged by fire. It will now be replaced by a new £14 billion airport called T5. The new terminal will be built on the site of the old Terminal 5.

Which Heathrow Terminal Is The Most Convenient?

If you’re flying into London Heathrow, then you’ll probably arrive at Terminal 5. This is because Terminal 5 is the largest terminal at Heathrow and also the closest to central London. However, if you’re arriving at Gatwick Airport, then you’ll probably end up at Terminal 1. This is because Terminal 1 is the nearest to central London.

How to Transfers Between Heathrow Terminals?

For travellers that would like to travel between terminals, there are frequent flight connection shuttle bus services that offer travellers easy journeys from one terminal to another, 24/7.

Other options include the use of free shuttle trains from Heathrow Central Station in T2 and T3 to T4 and T5. Passengers can purchase a free Inter-Terminal Transfer Ticket at the station.  The average transfer time is around 15 to 20 minutes. Oyster cards can also be used.

Another option is to use the London underground which is quick and easy. Using the Piccadilly Line these services run between terminals too – between Heathrow 1,2, 3 and 5 and then onto Terminal 4. Each transfer is usefully free of charge if passengers use their Oyster cards.

Which airlines use which terminal at Heathrow?

British Airways is the flag carrier and occupies all of Terminal 5, offering hub services to all international and domestic routes, more than any other airline from or to London Heathrow.

Terminal 3 caters primarily for long-haul flights to the US, South America, Asia and some flights to mainland Europe. Currenty, all flights that would have been taken through Terminal 3 are being served from Terminal 2 and 5. Airlines that use this terminal include:

  • American Airlines
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Delta Airlines
  • Emirates
  • Finnair
  • Hainan Airlines
  • Iberia Express
  • Virgin Atlantic
  • Vueling
