Alicante Airport Taxi Transfers (ALC)

One Airport for Many Destinations on the Spanish Costa Brava

Benidorm is the most popular destination for tourists arriving in Spain at Alicante Airport. In the winter, it is a haven for pensioners who want to escape from the harsh weather. The terrain in both the old and new town of Benidorm is flat, and mobility scooters are available for hire on almost every corner, making it easy for even the most physically challenged to get around. Shopping for groceries in Benidorm is inexpensive, and nearly all the shopkeepers speak good English. With café bars lining the streets, and hundreds of shops that sell Spanish leather goods, such as shoes and jackets, at a bargain price, Benidorm is a big hit with the young at heart. Airport transfers from Alicante (ALC) are easy with Airport Transfers UK when booked well in advance.

In the summer, Benidorm changes pace, and becomes a hive of activity for youngsters seeking a good time. With cheap food and alcohol in abundance, and over two thousand bars and clubs to choose from, the area is often crawling with loud and drunken stags and hens. Because of the mayhem the youngsters can cause, some people find Benidorm too crazy for their liking during high season. Luckily, there are a number of other options open to tourists who arrive at Alicante Airport.

Alicante Town itself is just 7 miles south of the airport. You can catch a local bus for less than 3 Euros, and although the journey will take 40 minutes, it takes a very scenic route. Alicante is a typical urban town, with retail outlets and busy streets, similar to many other European cities. However, its charming seafront promenade with small Spanish retail stalls alongside it gives the city a unique edge. The town boasts a traditional indoors Spanish food market every morning with fresh fish, meat, bread, fruit and vegetables on offer from the hundreds of stalls that set up inside there. There are a host of good restaurants in the vicinity, where you can sample local dishes, and the theatre often puts on shows that are suitable for multi-lingual audiences.

Further south still is the resort of Torrevieja. 27 miles from the airport, there is an express bus that leaves every two hours. As the city continues its rapid expansion, it has lost some of its old fishing village charm, but still holds a traditional Spanish market on Fridays, and there are many restaurants around the town that offer local cuisine. Geared up for tourism, there are over a hundred bars to choose from, and it is a happy middle ground between Benidorm and the quieter towns of the Costa Brava.

For a real taste of Spain, tourists head to one of the smaller villages that are dotted around the coastline. Villajoyosa is 7 miles away from Benidorm, a laid back and relaxed area, with colourful painted houses lining the seafront. A gentle stroll down the promenade will lead you to the harbour, which is home to both yachts and fishing boats.

Those who love history and nature head towards Denia. Once an important seaport for the Romans and Arabs, it is overlooked by a castle which was built in the 11th  century by the Moors, and is now home to the city’s archaeological museum. Denia’s Montgo mountain is a national park, and offers many hiking trails with stunning scenery to explore. Follow the trail to Cabo San Antonio’s marine reserve, and you’ll find one of the most interesting diving spots in Spain, with a rich variety of sea-life to discover.

Rural Costa Brava is delightful to explore, but although it is possible to do so by bus, the smaller towns are served only once or twice a day by public transport, so you will need to hire a car to appreciate all it has to offer. There are many companies offering car hire within the airport, but booking on the day of arrival often costs more, so it pays to shop around in advance on the internet to get the best price.

Other notable areas to explore around the Costa Brava include Javea, which was built as an inland walled settlement to protect its inhabitants against attacks from pirates; Altea, which is known as the city of culture due to the amount of museums and galleries in the area and Benissa, renowned for its mediaeval town centre. All can be explored when you book an in-resort transfer with Airport Transfers UK here.
